Easter Lily Tips
Posted Fri, Apr 08, 2011 11:02:04 AM by 101 Market modified by 101 Market

Easter is just around the corner. The sun is shining and the easter egg hunt should be a hit. Some people have complained about the little "fruite flies" flying around in the soil of their bulb plants. These little buggers come in the soil and when they are eggs they are so tiny you need a microscope to see them. The trick to cutting back on seeing them is to water your plants less. Drier soil will also help your flowers last a little longer. Bulb plants such as Easter lilies and Bulb Gardens like cooler temps as well. Happy Easter and we hope to see you in the coming days as the weather warms. Lesa

Home and Garden Show
Posted Wed, Mar 02, 2011 09:31:40 PM by 101 Market modified by 101 Market

Today was the opening of the Home and Garden Show. I had the opportunity to help the Minnesota State Florist association design two large lobby pieces and set out the 20 designs the local florist brought out to share with show attendees. While designing the piece we needed to keep in mind that thousands of people will be seeing our design. We also will not be getting any thing back from the design piece so money plays a big part for me as well. I chose to design a vertical piece with tropicals hoping they would hold up for the week and impact the person viewing the design. I have included some pictures taken from my camera phone. I hope you have a chance to visit the show and see the beautiful florals in person.

Trip to Bailey's Nursery
Posted Wed, Feb 23, 2011 05:49:32 PM by 101 Market modified by 101 Market

We visited one of our favorite vendors; Bailey's Nursery, in Cottage Grove MN today. It was a wonderful trip. We were able to see how the plants we buy are started, grown, and shipped ready to sell. I have enclosed pictures to follow the process. One Item I found very interesting was the rose bushes. They are taken as cuttings here in MN, planted in a starting medium, shipped to Arizona, and grown for a year. Once they are a certain size,

they are dug up and shipped back here as a bare root. The bare root is planted and given a shot of fertilizer. The plant is put in a warm greenhouse to establish root growth. Once they are established the workers monitor the temps in the green houses. The final product is shipped to us in April, May and beginning of June. I think everyone should have an Endless Summer hydrangea and an Easy Elegance rose bush in their landscape. Happy spring everyone. Lesa
